Thank you to all the supported BB Gives Back!

The rope community never stops amazing me. With all we had to do to plan and organize BeachBind, we had busy volunteers, staff, and presenters step up to the plate from every angle to help make a tiny bit of difference in the world. Every little bit helps! In this case, we were able to pop the $1000 cherry, raising $1019 for JFLAG, a Jamaican community org that supports GBLTQ populations in Jamica. This is a very much needed group as the culture is far behind the Western world on gay rights.

Thank you to everyone that supported this effort! First, thank you to Lee_Harrington for the inspiration to get this done, research and a generous donation. Thank you to wiwolverine for all of her time, hard work and energy setting up the auction and gathering donations. And a big big very big thanks to everyone else that donated auction items: knot_head, LaughingDragon, GirlOnFire, -Chel-, DireWo1f, Pedro, M0co, and EvieVane.

BeachBind Gives Back
Lee Harrington has lit a fire under our ass to do the right thing and not leave Jamaica without giving back to the local community. LGBTQ rights efforts are far behind the rest of the world there, so Lee selected JFLAG as our 2017 charity. JFLAG is doing a great deal of work for Jamaica's LGBTQ populations. One if their projects is Dwayne's House, providing physical shelter for LGBTQ youth facing homelessness, corrective rape, assault in general, trauma, and more:

J-FLAG is the first human rights organisation in the history of Jamaica to serve the needs of LGBT peoples and over time it became the first port of call for the media, resulting in J-FLAG assuming the role of the mouthpiece for the LGBT community.
​
J-FLAG is a Non-Profit NGO that is in the business of promoting social change in furtherance of the well-being of the members of the LGBT community, through a range of internally directed and externally focused tools including: Public Education, Crisis Intervention and Empowerment; Research; Rights-based Advocacy; Legal Aid and Legal Reform.
Mission: To promote social change by empowering the Jamaican lgbt community & build tolerance for and acceptance of the lgbt community by the wider Jamaican society

jyowa is a made-up word created by Yukimura Sensei which merges the characters for “rope” and for “speaking or communicating”, hence it can be translated as “communicating through ropes” or “rope stories”. This project was started in Tokyo in 2011 as a documentary film, yet it ended up becoming more of an aesthetic experience that takes the viewer into the unique universe of five of Japan’s top rope artists (by order of appearance): Naka Akira, Yukimura Haruki, Nawashi Kanna, Urado Hiroshi and Hajime Kinoko. In each of the the five chapters we can see two people taking a journey into a deep and profound level of communication in which rope takes a very special place.
